Why Network? (Section H)

This blog post follows up with our discussion and presentation by our guest speaker, Kelly Pederson of Rider University's Career Services. Ms. Pederson stated that 75-80%of today's jobs are found in networks and that most people have at least 250 contacts. She further stated that everyone should have a 30 seconds to 1 minute commercial to promote their interests. So, what does your commercial sound like? What interests would you personally need to promote? Personal? Professional? Career related? Post to this blog your thoughts on ways that you presently need or will need in the immediate further network contacts.

My quick commercial would sound like this:
Hello my name is Brandon Diaz. I am currently a freshman here at Rider University with a major in marketing. On campus I am a member of the Latin American Student Organization. At this time I work in the OIT technology department, assisting the helpdesk using my computer and technology experience. I have working knowledge in word processing, spreadsheets and graphics software and I am interested in gaining career-related experience in the field of marketing. I am a superior worker with a passion for technology and would be a great asset to any business or organization.
I would need to promote myself quickly and to the point, while acting in a professional manner. My commercial would need to describe all positive aspects of myself.
To network I would need to constantly act and behave in a professional mode, because you never know who’s watching. There may come a time when you may meet someone completely unexpectedly and he or she may have connections that you may be looking for. Being in this situation will occur more and more as you get older.

My 30 second commercial would sound like this:

Hi, my name is Ashley Perez. I am currently a student at Rider University with a double major in Accounting and International Business with a minor in the Spanish language. I am currently a lifeguard under the supervision of the swim coach at Rider University. I have accomplished two years of Advanced Accounting in high school and will pursue it till my masters. I am a hard working individual, with many leadership qualities. I would be a great asset to either a small or large corporation or organization.

My 30 second commercial is an overview of my personal and professional accomplishments. It is to the point and gives a brief summary of myself in a professional yet friendly manner. My commercial shows no negative aspects towards myself. Networking as I have learned is very important. No matter where I am, I should introduce myself with my commercial, be friendly yet professional, and make connections. You never know who may get you that job you’ve been wanting. Remember: It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

Aamir Hayes' 30 second commercial:

Hello, my name is Aamir R. Hayes and I am currently a freshman student at Rider University. I am here majoring in behavioral neuroscience. I am currently an active member of the Multicultural Student Leader Institution, the Black Student Union, and the On Fire poetry club of which I am one of the coordinating staff members. I have superior leadership and organizational skills, I am a people person, and have an internship experience in the psychology field. My passion is helping people and with my undying determination to accomplish any feat I will always have a will to learn and work towards success.

In my elevator speech I would have to give good eye contact and act in a professional manner to show the person that I would be a marketable acquisition to his/her liking and convenience. I can't be too long because my time is limited so I would have to forget about being nervous and get the message across to the intended receiver.

Hello, my name is Lisa Henderson and I am currently a full-time freshman student at Rider University with a major in Communications, specifically the broadcast journalism television/radio track. I am involved with the University’s television station, RUN, and I am also co-host of a music oriented weekly radio show with the school’s radio station. With my plethora of past leadership and organizational experience, determination and a vast array of social skills, I would be an excellent addition to your company.

I believe it is important that this “elevator speech” sell my positive attributes while refraining from being awkward…that is the easiest way to turn off a potential employer. I would make eye contact and use very subtle hand gestures while delivering this 30-second commercial. It is so important to also remain professional and confident. Career related skills seem most important to promote because the whole point of this is to please the employer and relay to them that you are the best person to handle whatever the job may be.

Hello,
My name is Nicholas Tufo, and I am currently a student majoring in Behavioral Neuroscience at Rider University. I am a Kodak certified photo lab technician and work for the CVS/Pharmacy corporation. I oversee the training of new lad technicians and ensure that they meet Kodak requirements for certification. I also manage and oversee the production and retail of photo-related products. My experience both leading and working with a team would make me an ideal candidate for any science related work settin in either a large or small corporation.

My 30 second commercial/speech about myself gives insight to who I am and some of my more important work information. It also lets my potential employer know that I am a certified lab technician which not alot of people can say. I suppose to further this I could give more specific details on my job or the skills required for me to do this job effectively and efficiently.

My 30 second commerical is a breif summary of me! It's purpose is to display who I am and my capabilites to the best of it's ability. Sometimes you might not always get that interview or sometimes your standing next to a casting director on the elevator who is looking for new talent. What are you going to say? The 30 second commerical helps pitch me in just a short amount of time. It's a way to network and find connections to get to where you want to be. Like I said in class when Kelly Pederson came to speak, it not always what you know, but who you know. Networking is the way to find those important people.

"Hello, my name is Jose Leiva and I am currently a freshman at Rider University. I am majoring in Accounting with a minor in Film and Media Studies. I am also involved outside the classroom as an active member of the Multicultural Student Leadership Institute and the Latin American Student Organization. With my corporate experience and sales skills gained from my internship at Merrill Lynch and job at Best Buy, I have strengthened my business skills and boosted sales for both companies at the same time. I plan to attain a Master's Degree in Accounting within my time at Rider University. I am very hard-working, honest, flexible, and have developed a no-nonsense work ethic that produces high quality work. I would be a great asset to your company."

I think I will need to emphasize my personal and professional traits, that relate to my career choice, in order to make myself stand out. I can't include everything I would like to, but a brief and "to the point" summary would attract some attention. This is important because network contacts are critical to landing a position or advancing in your career.
