Why Network? (Section D)
This blog post follows up with our discussion and presentation by our guest speaker, Kelly Pederson of Rider University's Career Services. Ms. Pederson stated that 75-80%of today's jobs are found in networks and that most people have at least 250 contacts. She further stated that everyone should have a 30 seconds to 1 minute commercial to promote their interests. So, what does your commercial sound like? What interests would you personally need to promote? Personal? Professional? Career related? Post to this blog your thoughts on ways that you presently need or will need in the immediate further network contacts.

So Tell Me About Yourself?
My Name is Ashley Pichardo and i am a Freshman at Rider University. I am Double Major,International Business and Business Administration with a minor in Global and Multinational Studies. I am President of Conover Residence Hall, a Bonner Leader/ Rider Community Scholar, a member of the Multinational Student Leadership Institute, Rider SERVES, Latin American Student Organization, and i am on a committee planning an International Service Trip. I am a hard worker with, incredible work ethic as my previous employer stated. My Passion is helping people, and that is an area i would love to pursue as my career.
That would be my 30 sec commercial.
I would need to promote my self in a professional and personal manner that would be related to my career.
To further my network contacts, i need to be make great connections with faculty and administration at rider university, and also to get to know my peers a little better because you never know who there parents are and how successful they are going to be in the future. You can never underestimate anyone, because you never know who there 250 networking contacts are?
Hi, my name is Danielle Brown. I am currently an entering student at Rider University with a major in communications and a track in public relations. I am in the process of completing a course in speech communication and expository writing. i am involved in many organizations and clubs on campus that help improve my networking and PR skills. I would love the opportunity to meet with you and possibly set up an informational interview so that I could learn more information about the ethics of a career in my field. If you want a student who will be dedicated and hardworking them I am the one you should consider.
this is my 30-second commercial
I would aslo include a question like, “May I send you a resume?” or “May I have your business card and contact you …” if my 30-second commercial was an e-mail message.
My quick commercial would sound like this:
Hello my name is Irving Pole. I am currently a freshman at Rider University; I am liberal arts major. On campus I am a member of M.S.L.I, which is a leadership organization. I've worked for Wawa for a little over two years. I am a very meticulous worker. I also take my work very seriously. I am skilled in word, power point, spreadsheet and some graphic software. I am a quality worker looking for career related experience in the field of arts.
I would need to promote myself quickly, but assertively in a professional manner. My commercial would showcase all of my strengths that I think would get the interest of the person I am talking to.
To network I would need to expand my horizons, by getting to know and introducing myself to new people. There may come a time when u meet a person and their father may be a Ceo of a company that you are interested in, so it pays to know people. The glory of networking is not only the connections you make, but how it makes one’s possibilities endless.
My 30 second commercial:
Hello my name is Vanessa Maldonado, I am a freshman at Rider University. My major is Biology. I am part of the American Medical Students Association, the Latin American Student Organization, Rider SERVES, and VOX. I am a very determined individual and I love to help people.
Networking could really help me in my career goals. Always talk to everyone, like Kelly Pederson said "never think someone can't help you". Also never get discouraged if someone really can't help you. Networking doesn't only help in your career, it can help in your social life too. To promote my personal interests I could talk about what my hobbies are. To promote my professional interests I would inform them that I want to go into the medical field as my career.
A commercial speech about me would say:
Hi, My name is Voncia Payton. I am an Undergraduate at Rider University with a major in Marketing. Although I'm from a small town named Pemberton, I love to meet new people and try new things. I have four years of customer-service work experience. I am apart of BSU and On Fire which help to enhance your leadership skills as well as your writing skills. I'm also very flexible and able to work alone or in group projects.
Networking is a benefit for everyone because to know someone in the field allows way you to get a closer understanding of what they do and if you would still be interested.
You also have the opportunity to receive a career faster through a positive word of mouth on a personal level, than just a sent resume.

30 second speech
To broaden my network, I need to get more involved and when I meet people to always give them a great impression. You never know who knows who. To my make network more successful i need to stay in touch with people. Send everyone an e-mail everyonce in awhile and to always thank them for there time.
Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening
My name is DeFron Dominick and I am currently a freshman at Rider University, a school well know for its business and accounting programs. I am double majoring in accounting and finance. Having worked at KOR Companies, an accounting firm that deals more with real estate, I discovered that accounting was a field that I enjoyed and worked well in. At Rider I am a member of Latin American Student Organization, Black Student Union, Merging Student Leadership Program, an executive leader of On Fire: A Literary Journal of the African Diaspora and am a member of the volleyball team. I am a hardworking and determined individual and I would like to use my talents to benefit your company.
This would be my 30 second commercial for myself. I believe it is very important to maintain networks with people because they could know people who can help you in the future. The more people you know and the more people they know will lead to a connection with various groups of people that can help you make your way in the world. Hopefully someday we can all be a contact of some sort that will benefit someone else.
My 30 second commercial would go like this…
Hi, I’m Anjel Richardson, and I’m a full-time freshman student at Rider University. I’m double majoring in Elementary education and Psychology, and after graduating from Rider I plan to become an elementary school teacher while working on getting my doctorate in psychology. I am very social and outgoing and am an active member in BSU, On Fire, MSLI and the BSU Gospel Choir. During my senior year of high school I student taught at an elementary school through a Volunteer Internship Program at my school and I just know that working with children will always me a passion of mine and hopefully a career in the near future.
I no that in the future network contacts will be a big aid in helping me secure a teaching job. With the economy in its current state I fear that it will be hard for me to find a job quickly. I fear that my degree may just become a useless piece of paper, even though I attend such an accredited teaching school like Rider. I can’t just rely on what I know but who I know, and furthermore who knows me. In the past networking has helped me immensely. Thanks to my volunteering I have been able to broaden my circle to the right people, who later became my references for my college application.
Tell me about yourself?
My name is Quanda Brinson and I am a freshman at Rider University. I am majoring in Business Management and looks forward in double majoring in Business Management Psychology. I am a member of BSU (Black Student Union) LASO (Latin American student Organization), The Rider News Paper and Gospel Choir. I am very determined and willing to get what I should get done. I am people person and very hard working as my previous employer stated. My Passion is singing and reaching out to help other with disabilities.
That would be my 30 sec commercial.
I would want to present my self in a professional manner and express my abilties basing it on my future career.
To expand my network contacts I need to not only make better connections with faculty and administrators a Rider University but also through connections with my peers. As the saying goes "It's not always what you know, but who you know."
Hello my name is Cynthia Woghiren and i am currently a freshman at Rider University. I am majoring in Sociology and a member of Black Student Union, ROCAS, Latin American Student Organization, On Fire, and Rider University Gospel Choir. My involvement in these varieties of clubs allow me to be exposed different culture and work involvements. Management of time and organization is key in order to juggle the different clubs in order for me give equal time and dedication.
Networking allows me to meet new individuals that would benefit me and as I would them, in order to reach goals and levels in which I have set for myself.

My 30 sec commercial
Hi. My name is Amanda Aviles and I am a psychology major at Rider University. I worked at Ms. Huguette’s Dance Studio in Bayonne as a receptionist, so I have well developed communication skills from interacting with clients and answering the phone. I’m also enrolled in a communication public speaking course at Rider this semester. I volunteer for Relay for Life organized by the American Cancer Society every year and helped organize the event at my high school for two years. I have also been volunteering to encourage the younger generation as well as older to vote in this upcoming election. I try to be involved in my community and network as much as I can. My cell number is 551-200-2604 so you can reach me at anytime with any information about opening opportunities.
My commercial is mostly promotes my communication and that fact that I like to volunteer and stay interactive in my community. It’s career related because I want to be a psychiatrist, so I want to have good communication skills and social skills. However, my skills seem more personal than professional. I should incorporate more professional skills in my commercial. I would need network contacts in areas such as therapy centers, clinics, and places that I can get to know the psychiatric need and role in the community I reside in.
My 30 sec commercial would be something like this:
My name is Racquel Butler and I am a freshman at Rider University, with a double major in accounting and international business. I am currently enrolled in speech communications and Spanish. These courses are helping me get on the right path for my career. I am presently involved in many leadership clubs and organizations on campus like; MSLI, BSU, LASO. If it’s okay with you, I would like to set up an informational interview with you so I can gather more information about your company.
Networking is very important to me. I do know a lot of people, but as the speaker said, most people have at least 250 contacts. For me to get to that point, I would have to not be afraid to put myself out there, just let go and introduce myself to anybody and everybody because you never know who knows who. And after that I have to learn to stay in contact with them, which will build raltionships.
